Grab those hiking boots! Bring sturdy and comfortable trekking boots for exploring, especially the Himalayan trails, if that’s on the itinerary. Also, hiking boots in general were great for the rocky roads even in midst of the city in Kathmandu.
Pack clothing suitable for layering, including lightweight breathable clothes for warmer days and warmer layers for colder nights. A waterproof jacket and pants are essential, especially if traveling during the monsoon season.

I must have been armored by youthful bravado when I ventured on these buses with nothing but the shirt on my back and my backpack. I was ill prepared for overnight weather!

A pro-tip for visiting religious sites where one must take off their shoes is to bring a small tote bag or sling backpack–try to keep these as small as possible as you will likely be within a crowd. You can tuck your shoes away to keep them with you. I found the risk of someone accidentally taking my belongings with them by accident was anxiety inducing. This was a small way of providing security for myself.

This means covering shoulders, knees, and avoiding revealing clothing out of respect for local sensibilities and religious beliefs.
