Historical Significance
Old Town in Mombasa, Kenya, holds great historical and cultural significance. Dating back to the 14th century, it showcases a unique blend of Swahili, Arab, and European influences, reflecting its role as a major trading post. Its well-preserved architecture, narrow winding streets, and historical buildings offer a window into the past, while its vibrant atmosphere captures the essence of coastal life. Old Town celebrates a multicultural heritage and is a vibrant coastal city that is a center for tourism.
The Neighborhood
Walking through the city reminded me of all the colors Wes Anderson uses in his cinematography: yellows, blues, pinks, and whites. The tour guide explained that the old Old Town is mostly yellow and the newer Old Town is white and blue.
Old Town Market
The town is home to a lively and bustling marketplace. Among its treasures, the centuries-old Mackinnon Market stands out, renowned for its colorful array of fresh produce and authentic local crafts. Built in 1914, the market’s vibrant atmosphere immerses visitors in the essence of Swahili culture, providing a sensory journey through the region’s flavors and traditions. Strolling through its narrow, historic streets, one can experience the heart and soul of this coastal enclave.
We met merchants selling a diverse range of goods, including fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, and spices, as well as seafood and meat. Additionally, the market offers a variety of local crafts and handmade items, including textiles, jewelry, woodcarvings, and souvenirs. Visitors can find a rich assortment of Swahili and Kenyan productsβit was an absolutely vibrant experience.
Helpful Tips
We spent one day in Old Town with our helpful guide. Having a tour guide was incredibly helpful, and I highly recommend the service. Our guide was associated with Fort Jesus Museum, he was a tour guide for the museum and you could choose a package that included an Old Town tour as well (see here for rates). Overall great experience for the short time we were there.
