India is a kaleidoscope of colors, cultures, and contrasts. This country beckons adventurers with its captivating blend of ancient traditions and modern dynamism. As the world’s seventh-largest country, India is a vast canvas painted with diverse landscapes ranging from the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas to the sun-kissed beaches of Goa.
India is steeped in history! The country boasts architectural marvels like the Taj Mahal and temples that echo tales of bygone eras. But beyond its architectural wonders, India is a culinary haven, offering a symphony of flavors and spices that dance on the taste buds.
India has countless festivals, spiritual practices, and a warm, welcoming spirit. Furthermore, India promises an immersive journey that transcends the ordinary—a journey that unfolds amidst the vibrancy of its bustling markets, the tranquility of its spiritual retreats, and rich culture.
I traveled to India back in 2013 and I was there for 2 and a half months. I triangulated Agra, New Delhi, Kolkata, among the well known cities and the eastern states to small towns by train in search for history, religious practices, and architecture during my studies. That travel continues to feed my passion for seeking the road less traveled by. I hope this discovery guide inspires you to take your next step towards India.
Weather and Packing
Weather in India varies greatly depending on the region and time of year. In general, India experiences three main seasons: summer, monsoon, and winter.
Bring a mix of warm clothing for cooler regions and light clothing for warmer areas. Overall, it’s important to check the weather forecast for the specific region you plan to visit and pack accordingly.
Consider a shawl or scarf for visiting religious sites. When I made my trip to India, I personally did not have a shawl or scarf. You’ll find so many vendors selling these items that if you are missing this item yourself, no need to worry. This is easily remedied on site.

Culinary Delights
I had the privilege of enjoying Indian food for 2 and a half months straight. And as someone who didn’t have that culinary experience readily available to me in the States (since I lived in a very small midwestern town), I was absolutely delighted.
Indulging in diverse Indian cuisine is truly so flavorful. It is a myriad of taste and aromas. From the kebabs of North India, marinated in rich spices and grilled to perfection, to the crispy dosas of South India, filled with savory fillings and served with flavorful chutneys, every dish tells a story of tradition and innovation.
Trying street food delicacies like chaat, pani puri, and samosas is not just about satisfying hunger; it’s about immersing oneself in the vibrant street culture and culinary heritage of India. Transportation Tips
While in India, I traveled by domestic flights, train, bus, van, taxis, bike-rickshaws and most of all, their auto-rickshaws.
Utilizing India’s extensive railway network for long-distance travel is not only economical but also offers a unique cultural experience, allowing travelers to witness the diverse landscapes and interact with locals along the way. From the bustling platforms of major cities to the scenic routes through picturesque countryside, train journeys in India often become cherished memories of the travel experience.
When considering domestic flights for efficient travel between major cities, it’s essential to book in advance to secure the best deals and ensure smooth transitions between airports. While air travel can significantly reduce travel time, especially for long distances, travelers should also factor in additional time for airport procedures and transportation to and from city centers.
I cannot stress this enough–but build in extra-EXTRA time for sequencing transportation. Time is different in India. They take their time and more often than not, this means delays.
Using auto-rickshaws and bike-rickshaws for local transportation provides a convenient and budget-friendly way to navigate through bustling streets and narrow alleyways in Indian cities. Beyond just reaching destinations, these iconic modes of transport offer a glimpse into the pulse of urban life, with their colorful designs and bustling sounds adding to the sensory experience of exploring India’s vibrant cities.
Unless you look quite local, or can speak the local language–be prepared for bartering.
Health and Safety
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially in India’s often hot and humid climate. Safe drinkable water for a foreigner was my biggest hurdle. Try your best to stock up on bottled waters. Unfortunately, you might stock up on plastic waste this way but it might be the best way to keep yourself safe. You might find very few places to refill a water bottle.
Using sunscreen is essential, even during the winter months, as the sun’s UV rays can still cause skin damage. Applying sunscreen with a high SPF before heading outdoors helps protect the skin from sunburn and reduces the risk of long-term skin damage.
Being cautious and selective with street food choices is advisable to avoid foodborne illnesses. While street food offers a tempting array of flavors, it’s essential to observe hygiene practices and opt for vendors with clean cooking environments to minimize the risk of gastrointestinal issues.
And if you end up with gastrointestinal issues, it is very easy to go to a local pharmacist. They are safe and affordable.
It’s wise to review the most recent safety guidelines provided by the U.S. Department of State before traveling to India. Staying informed about any potential risks or security concerns ensures a safe and enjoyable travel experience, allowing travelers to make informed decisions and take necessary precautions during their stay.

Cultural Etiquette
When visiting religious sites in India, it’s important to dress modestly as a sign of respect for the local customs and beliefs. This typically means covering shoulders, knees, and sometimes even your head, to adhere to cultural norms and avoid causing offense to worshippers or religious authorities.
It’s customary to remove shoes before entering temples or other sacred places in India, as a gesture of humility and reverence. By respecting this tradition, travelers demonstrate their understanding and appreciation of the religious significance attached to these spaces, fostering goodwill and cultural understanding.
A pro-tip for visiting religious sites where one must take off their shoes is to bring a small tote bag or sling backpack–try to keep these as small as possible as you will likely be within a crowd. You can tuck your shoes away to keep them with you. I found the risk of someone accidentally taking my belongings with them by accident was anxiety inducing. This was a small way of providing security for myself.
When shopping in local markets in India, bargaining is a common practice and part of the cultural experience. However, it’s important to do so respectfully. Keep in mind the livelihoods of the sellers and the value of their goods. By bargaining in a friendly manner, travelers can engage in a cultural exchange while also ensuring fair prices for both parties involved.
India is more than just a destination; it’s an odyssey of discovery, where every corner reveals a new facet of its rich culture. From the majestic allure of the Taj Mahal to the spiritual sanctity of Varanasi, and the culinary symphony that tantalizes the taste buds, India offers an unparalleled journey. As my own journey in India continues to inspire my own life, I encourage you to embark on your own adventure, armed with the insights and intro-tips provided here, and uncover the magic of this extraordinary country.
