Explore the beauty of the Maasai Mara savannah and connect with nature on an incredible safari adventure at Basecamp Eagles View in Kenya.
Mara Naboisho Conservancy
The Mara Naboisho Conservancy is of immense importance to both the Maasai community and Kenya as a whole. For the Maasai, it represents a sustainable and community-driven approach to conservation. Through tourism and wildlife management, the Maasai derive economic benefits and employment opportunities, preserving their traditional way of life while reducing human-wildlife conflicts. The conservancy also protects their land rights and fosters a sense of ownership over the area, which helps safeguard their cultural heritage.
For Kenya, the conservancy contributes to wildlife conservation efforts. It provides a vital wildlife corridor connecting the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the Serengeti in Tanzania. This aids in preserving biodiversity, supporting tourism, and enhancing the national economy. Additionally, the conservancy promotes responsible tourism practices, which contribute to Kenya’s global reputation as a wildlife and ecotourism destination. Overall, the Mara Naboisho Conservancy showcases the potential for sustainable conservation that benefits both the local community and the country at large.
Basecamp Eagle View
Our stay at Basecamp Eagle View started in the Wilderness Camp, nestled within the pristine wilderness, the campground view offered an expansive vista of the savannah. Basecamp Eagle View has an amazing location on the high ridge of a hilltop within the Mara Naboisho Conservancy.
This was my first time on a safari and I learned some safari manners during our stay. Something that makes so much sense yet something that never crossed my mind was curfew. We could not walk alone from our Wilderness Camp to the reception building or vice versa between the times of 6:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. This was a time when big cats hunted and a time when visitors might not see so well in general. We were chaperoned by Maasai warriors, 2 visitors per Maasai.
Game Drives
We went on a daily game drive to experience the open savannah punctuated by acacia trees. Skilled Maasai tour guides navigated the classic Toyota Land Cruisers through the terrain. We saw herds of elephants, giraffes, wildebeest, warthogs, or as the locals called them pumbas, just like The Lion King, and so much more. We were entering the conservancy after a few weeks of rain and the grass had started to re-green. With the grass growing, the waters recharged—the animals were thriving in the Mara. The conservancy’s strict low-impact tourism policies ensure a serene, exclusive experience, with the thrill of spotting endangered species and witnessing the primal rhythms of the African wilderness, making it an unforgettable and ethical safari expedition.
Safari Walk
A personal favorite experience was the walking safari tour led by Maasai guides. As we walked, we discovered the traditional knowledge of the Maasai people, such as tracking wildlife, identifying medicinal plants, and understanding their sustainable land management techniques. This intimate experience allowed us to connect with the land and its inhabitants on a deeper level, all while gaining a profound appreciation for the Maasai’s harmonious coexistence with nature. It’s a unique opportunity to learn and respect the indigenous wisdom that sustains this remarkable ecosystem.
Our journey through the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, and our stay at Basecamp Eagle View, has been nothing short of extraordinary. The conservancy embodies the harmonious relationship between the Maasai community and the land, showcasing the power of sustainable conservation that benefits both the locals and Kenya. Our time at Basecamp Eagle View provided us with unparalleled experiences, from the stunning wilderness camp views to the exhilarating game drives led by our knowledgeable guides. The walking safari, in particular, allowed us to connect with the land on a profound level.
We are immensely grateful for this eye-opening journey and the privilege of witnessing the incredible efforts towards conservation and preservation. The Mara Naboisho Conservancy is a true gem, a testament to the beauty of a sustainable, community-driven approach to conservation. We leave with hearts full of gratitude and a renewed dedication to protecting our planet’s precious ecosystems. Thank you, Mara Naboisho Conservancy and Basecamp Eagle View, for this unforgettable experience.
