Nairobi, Kenya, the country’s capital and largest city, has experienced rapid urbanization and population growth over the years. This growth, coupled with rural-to-urban migration, has contributed to the emergence of Kibera, one of Africa’s largest slums. Originally, Kibera was established as a settlement for Nubian soldiers during the British colonial era. However, with limited resources, infrastructure, and land ownership, it has grown into a densely populated informal settlement, where many residents face challenges related to housing, sanitation, and basic services. Kibera’s evolution reflects the broader urbanization issues that many cities in the developing world grapple with.

We toured the community with Design + Build KDI. They are dedicated to uplifting the Kibera slum in Kenya and they are focused on community-driven, sustainable development, improving living conditions by constructing sanitation facilities, water systems, public spaces, and affordable housing. KDI collaborates closely with local residents, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment. Their holistic approach promotes social and environmental resilience while addressing pressing issues in this marginalized community, striving to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life for Kibera’s residents.
