Caddo (Ka-dow) Lake is located in East Texas near the border with Louisiana. It’s a captivating landscape known for its sprawling cypress trees draped with Spanish moss. This natural lake covers around 26,800 acres and is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and outdoor adventurers alike.
I visited Caddo Lake in the midst of the Texas Summer and here are some helpful things to know to plan your weekend to Caddo Lake.
A Brief Overview of Caddo Lake
Named after the Caddo Native Americans who once inhabited the area, Caddo Lake has a rich cultural and ecological history. Unlike most lakes in Texas, Caddo Lake is naturally occurring, believed to have formed in the 19th century when the Red River floodwaters created a vast wetland area. Today, the lake includes marshes, swamps, bayous, and lakeside forest areas, creating a diverse ecosystem that is one of the most biodiverse in Texas.
Caddo Lake is also part of the Ramsar Convention, which designates it as a “Wetland of International Importance.” This recognition emphasizes the lake’s global ecological significance, particularly as a habitat for migratory birds, native fish, and other wildlife. Its natural beauty and pristine wilderness make it a popular destination for those seeking a retreat from modern life.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Caddo Lake sits about a two-hour drive from Shreveport, Louisiana, and a three-hour drive from Dallas, Texas. The closest town is Uncertain, Texas, a quaint and quirky place that embraces the lake’s off-the-beaten-path allure.

I had a great time renting my kayak from Riverbend Outfitters, but there are a handful to chose from! Paddling through the winding bayous, you’ll discover an otherworldly scene of Spanish moss-laden trees. For those interested in fishing, Caddo Lake is an angler’s paradise. The lake is home to various fish species, including largemouth bass, crappie, and catfish. Many visitors come here for the chance to catch trophy-sized bass, and you’ll find a few fishing charters that can help you land a prize catch. Discovering the Local Wildlife
Wildlife is abundant around Caddo Lake, with over 200 bird species recorded in the area. Birdwatchers will have the opportunity to spot bald eagles, herons, wood ducks, and various migratory waterfowl.
